Sun Disk - Day's Knob Site

Sun Disk - Day's Knob Archaeological Site

Sandstone, 2 cm (0.8") diameter, 0.5 cm (0.2") thickness, a well-known motif in artifacts worldwide.  This was dislodged by the author's posterior during an unscheduled slide down the steep and eroding east side of the hill (technique from Indiana Jones School of Archaeology).  Note the classic mouth in the form of a bird (facing right), the face (sun?) in the distinctly circumscribed center circle, and the typical small figure emerg- ing (right) from the mouth of the center face.

Below, the reverse side, imagery less obvious but very likely the classic bifrontal figure.  Below this, the edge of the disk.

Below left, for comparison, a similar figure found by David King near London, England, in an area known to have produced many Paleolithic artifacts.  Note the classic small creature emerging from the mouth of Mr. King's figure.
