Summer 1987
The first
artifact recognized - a simple bifacial hand axe (or
"chopper" or hoe or whatever) that
appeared partially buried on the "driveway" up the
knob after years of grading and erosion to at least 25cm (10")
below the original surface level. (Author's youngest daughter
- now a successful vascular surgeon - included for scale.)
In the background
and 27m (90') below is the almost 230 years old pioneer road following
an ancient "Indian" trail along the ridge, itself 90m
(300') above the surrounding terrain.
